iReo 1 is our beginner Māori language course that introduces you to the foundations including pronunciation, greetings, common words, simple phrases, and basic sentences. You’ll also explore customs and cultural concepts that bring the language to life.
This course is designed for you to build confidence and strengthen your ability to use te reo Māori naturally in everyday life.
iReo 1 is perfect for absolute beginners living in Australia who wish to connect with the Māori language and culture in a respectful, authentic way.
It combines practical language learning with cultural insight, so you go beyond learning the language — you live it.

Course Prerequisites
No previous knowledge of te reo Māori is required.
Course Topics
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
Week 1: Identify and pronounce the Māori alphabet.
Week 2: Pronounce long and short vowels and vowel blends.
Week 3: Identify and pronounce pronouns (you, I, we, us, them).
Week 4: Pronounce people and place names.
Week 5: Use greetings and farewells; ask and answer “how are you?”.
Week 6: Course summary and daily practice.
Time Commitment: 3-5 hours per week.
Full access: Learners will have full access to the online learning resources for 8 weeks.
Read only access: Learners will have read-only access for an additional four weeks.

Throughout your study you’ll be supported by a kaiāwhina (support person) and join our online learning community.

Can I access the materials after the course?
Yes, all participants have 8 weeks of full access to complete the course plus an additional 4 weeks read-only access to review their learnings.

Will I receive a certificate of completion?
Yes, certificates will be emailed on successful completion of the course.
Are there early bird discounts?
Yes, a $50 early bird discount will apply to all registrations and payments received within the designated early bird registration period.
Can I register for multiple courses?
Yes, you can register for multiple courses. For the best experience, we suggest taking them one at a time rather than all at once.
What support is available?
A kaiāwhina (support person) is available via the online community in your digital classroom. The kaiāwhina will answer pātai (questions) asked in the forum. We highly encourage learners to participate in the forum and provide peer-to-peer support to each other too.

Can I enrol with friends or colleagues?
Yes, absolutely! Studying with family, friends, and/or colleagues is highly encouraged.
What if I fall behind?
If life gets busy, do not worry. You will have 8 weeks of full access to work through the course at your own pace, plus an extra 4 weeks of read-only access to review your learning. You can pick up where you left off at any time during this period. Our kaiāwhina and online community are also available to support you if you need help getting back on track.
